This first Daimyo Tachi is one of the prizes of my collection: it was a gift from the Emporer Meiji to Professor Fenollosa in 1888. I chose it because I think it would be the center piece of any collection, and as such it is outstandingly beautiful, and unique. WIth a million dollars in hand, and a month or two in Japan to look you still could not find one like it anywhere --- in Tokyo or indeed, in the world. I have never seen or heard of anything like it. The Phoenix design is of course the private reserve of the Emporer and his family. The blade is dated 1356, a Bizen signed and dated piece. The Koshirae is a masterpiece of Japanese craftmanship and workmanship, far exceeding any work seen on Western swords or even Renaissance medieval silver and goldsmithing... which, of course, would cost you ten or twenty times as much! Truly an amazing piece.
